Quick Summary / Abstract: Staff will present an overview of work by the Community Engagement Department to support LCAP Goal #3 (Enhance Parent and Community Engagement and Communication) and to engage our community in the success of our schools.
Background: Fulfilling our district’s mission - each student will graduate with the skills needed to contribute and thrive in a changing world - depends on students being successful in school. Family engagement is one of the single most important factors in ensuring student success in school. Through the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), educators in California are charged with engaging families in the education of their children. Family engagement relies on effective communication, outreach, and connection to our schools. Realizing our mission involves a combination of connecting with families and directly connecting with our larger community to involve them in the success of our students and our schools. Our Community Engagement Department leads and supports our district in realizing these goals.

This report updates our Board and community on the current status and future plans and goals for the enhancement of District communication and engagement between schools and families, schools and students, and schools and community.
Status Our district’s Community Engagement Department continues to support the ongoing development and enhancement of District communication practices and procedures. In addition to continued training and support in the use of Blackboard tools - website, mobile app, and mass communication - our work in 2020-21 has expanded to include developing best practices and supporting the use of Zoom for online meetings and webinars as a key tool for engaging parents and guardians. Our parent education program, Livermore Learns, has grown through its easily accessible online workshops. We continue to support engagement through the use of survey tools, specifically Qualtrics and Thoughtexchange. Social media platforms, with their own areas of focus, continue to work together to engage the community around us. Our department staff members continue to improve our website so that it serves as a robust resource for students, families, and community members.

In addition to direct communication, we have organized methods of outreach to our community that offer multiple ways for staying informed and for participating in our schools. Focused media outreach and public events (offered virtually in 2020-21) are strategic ways of engaging our community to showcase our students and schools and to encourage engagement. Participation by District staff in community meetings complements our outreach efforts by providing personal representation and District voice in our larger community.

Among staff members at all levels within our district, efficient and meaningful communication is essential to the success of our work as educators. Support by our Community Engagement Department provides site administrators, teachers, and other staff with tools to communicate effectively with staff and families. In 2020-21, we supported District departments and schools in not only maintaining, but improving, their communication and engagement with families and partners.
