Quick Summary / Abstract:
Background: California adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in 2013. In addition, the State Board of Education adopted the California Curriculum Framework for Science in 2016. These rigorous standards and framework help prepare students for the 21st Century by emphasizing problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. To support districts with the adoption process, the State also provided districts with the Toolkit for Instructional Materials Evaluation.
Status During the 2020-21 school year, a Textbook Adoption Committee formed to review and evaluate middle school science instructional materials. The committee consisted of 11 middle school science teachers representing all five of our middle schools (Christensen, East Avenue, Junction, Mendenhall, Joe Michell) and Vineyard. The Committee met to review the list of State-approved middle school science instructional materials provided by the California State Board of Education. The Committee narrowed the list of publishers to five and invited each publisher to make a presentation to the Committee. An evaluation rubric was used to determine which two instructional materials would be piloted.

After careful review, analysis, evaluation, and discussion of the pros and cons of each set of instructional materials, including the digital components, the Committee selected Discover Education Science and McGraw Hill Inspire to be piloted in the spring of 2021.

The 4-week pilot for each program allowed teachers to use pilot instructional materials, including digital components, in their hybrid classrooms. The Toolkit for Instructional Materials Evaluation (TIME) rubric was used to compare the various aspects of these instructional materials. Both qualitative and quantitative data was used in comparing these programs to determine the best fit for the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD).

Based on the data from the rubric, the evaluations, and feedback, Discovery Education Science is being recommended for instructional materials adoption in middle school science.

A public hearing is being held to review the process and answer questions. Based on the outcome of this public hearing, a formal recommendation will be brought to the Board for consideration and approval on Tuesday, June 29th.

The materials are available for public viewing at our District office from June 1 through June 24, 2021. Parents and our community may also preview the materials online following information provided via a Blackboard message sent to all our parents.
Fiscal Impact The instructional materials will be purchased out of restricted Lottery Funds, and the District-established budget for instructional materials using Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) funds. The estimated cost for the 6-8 instructional materials, accompanying technology, and professional development Discovery Education is $600,000.
Superintendent's Recommendation: This report is informational only and requires no action be taken by the Board of Education at this time. Board approval for formal adoption is scheduled for June 29, 2021.
